Self Care | The Anxiety Diaries

Self care is important when you're having a bad day with your mental health or just taking a day for yourself in a busy week.

We can get so busy with work and life, that we forget that sometimes we just need to stop every once in a while and think about taking care of ourselves. It can be hard finding the time to take five for yourself, especially when we've got our to do lists and our everyday lives. Sometimes we are so busy we forget that sometimes we need to keep the door shut, stay indoors and have a day to just do things for you. It's okay to put yourself first, sometimes with life, you need to do just that.

I like to be busy that I forget to have a day or weekend for myself, it isn't until I have that day to myself that I realise that I really needed it. Having that day or time to yourself can really help your well being as well as your mental health.

Self care can be more than treating yourself to something or going for a walk, there are many different ways in which you can care for yourself. With Self Care Week approaching ( Monday 18th November to Sunday 24th November 2019) I thought I'd share a few of my favourite things I love to do as part of my self care routine!

A BATH - A bubble bath on a cold evening, after a long day at work is the best way to unwind. Or on a Saturday afternoon whilst the rain is pouring outside your window. I love a bath! Treating yourself to a lush bath bomb or a scented mango body shop product always helps. A good book is also essential when having a bubble bath.

RUNNING - Over the summer I redeveloped a love of running. I find running leaves me leaving things at the door and all I have to focus on is running and not collapsing along Worthing Seafront., whilst I try and catch my breath-I won't be running a marathon anytime soon. Running is a great way to get you out of the house and having something to distract your mind. Running can help boost your mood and well being and help reduce any anxiety as well as stress. Any form of exercise can have this effect or even going for a walk.

READING - I find reading really helps get your mind lost in a completely different world. I love books. I find browsing through Waterstones really relaxing and if I happen to find a good book along the way, its a win! You can't have enough books, can you? Plus I find reading before I sleep, really helps me to fall asleep, rather than aimlessly scroll through social media.

SLEEP -  It seems really obvious doesn't it. Sleep is so important when it comes to taking care of yourself when you are dealing with your mental health or even if you need that day to yourself. Having an early night can really help. I for one am guilty for not having enough sleep and will always watch one more episode or read that last chapter before calling it a night and before I know it, another hour has gone past. I found stressing about how much sleep I get doesn't help either. You'll fall asleep when you will, there's no point in stressing yourself out about getting that eight hours.

TREATS - Sometimes a treat is needed. This can be something you don't usually treat yourself to. A new bag, a cupcake from the bakery, a new lipstick...whatever the feck you like! Something to treat yourself too, you deserve being treated. This could also treats yourself to a pamper day! Having your hair done, going to the spa, having a massage...it is important that you feel good.

WRITING- Having a journal or notebook to keep a diary of how you feel can really help to express how you are feeling. I find writing really helps me with how I feel and if I can't express how I'm feeling physically, I can express how I'm feeling through words. I find I can get lost in words and thoughts that it really helps me to understand why I am anxious or what brought on my anxiety. Having a notebook to hand can really help you when you need it.

There are many things you could embrace if you are looking to start some kind of Self Care routine, these are just a few I do a couple of times a week or whenever I feel like I need to take care of myself.
